BS Math students partake in MathConfluence 2025, finds math ‘more approachable’

Students from the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics of Mindanao State University - General Santos City (MSU-GSC) took part in a mathematics conference, expressing that it made math feel more approachable to them held at Ateneo de Davao University, April 29-30.

Anchored on the theme “Expanding Mathematical Horizons”, the MathConfluence 2025 aimed to bring together mathematicians, researchers, educators, and students in celebrating mathematical thinking and its applications.

With a total of nine schools participating in the event, a fourth year student named Michael P. Tañalas was hailed as Best Thesis - Oral Presenter for his research entitled “Restrained Weakly Connected 2 Domination and the Lexicographic Product of Graphs”.

According to Ariane Grace Andana,  a participant of the event, she realized how wide and fascinating the world of math really is.

“I enjoyed seeing how math can be used in real-life situations through the applied math talks, and also how deep and beautiful it can be in the pure math presentations. It made me see math in a new light—not just as something we study, but as something that helps us understand the world in so many ways,” Andana emphasized.

Moreover, she thought that conducting events like MathConfluence plays a big role by giving people the chance to connect, share ideas, and get inspired.

“They create a space where students, teachers, and researchers can learn from each other and see how math is growing and being used in new ways. It helps keep the subject alive and exciting for future generations,” she said.

In addition, Andana stated that by the end of the event, Mathematics had become more approachable to them and demonstrated how research is not only for experts, but for anyone who is curious and can appreciate it.

There were 64 participants including two faculties with 3rd and 4th year BS Math students attending the MathConfluence.
